On January 2, 2020, Mark Nettleton spoke with Steve Kelly of WOOD Radio 1300 AM regarding the changes to the Michigan Lead and Copper Rules. As a result of these changes, all local units of government with public water supplies are required to: prepare and submit a preliminary Distribution System Materials Inventory and beginning in 2021, public water supplies with lead service lines must replace all such service lines at a rate of 5% and not to exceed 20 years. Mark explained the State has established a budget of $30 to $40 million dollars to address the communities with large amounts of lead lines, but the cost to replace all the lead lines (approximately 500,000) in the State will cost between $2 billion and $2.5 billion.
