Curtis L. Underwood's practice is varied in the fields of real estate, business, and estate planning, he has particular experience in the following matters:
Condominium Litigation. Curtis represents condo owner’s whose rights under the bylaws and master deeds have been breached by their co-owners or by the condominium association. While these matters are often resolved through negotiation, Curtis has also been successful in litigation and mediation for condominium owners.
Boundary-Line Matters. He represents real property owner’s in boundary-line matters. This includes litigation and dispute resolution between neighboring property owners. Further, Curtis reviews legal title to aid clients in securing title insurance (or towards other ends) for owners preparing real property for sale or acquisition.
Real Property Acquisition. Curtis represents a variety of parties in the acquisition of real property. This includes commercial properties and residential properties. Curtis’ services involve negotiations, preparing purchase documents, advising on matters of liability and enforcement, aiding and coordinating environmental assessments (including BEAs), handling title insurance matters, and tenant matters.
Gig Economy. He has developed a practice representing independent contractors such as programmers, personal trainers, marking consultants, models, and web developers. Curtis has geared this practice to be cost-effective in meeting the needs of clients who work for a high volume of clients that require relatively low administrative complexity. These services generally include contract development, entity and corporate matters, tax planning, liability assessment, and collections planning.
Curtis is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Grand Rapids Bar Association. He grew up in the Grand Rapids community before attending Spring Arbor University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. Following graduation, Curtis returned to Grand Rapids to work as a foster care case manager before attending law school.
He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he graduated with high distinction, receiving the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award, and was selected for membership in the Order of the Coif. While in law school, Curtis was a research assistant in the area of corporate law and was a judicial extern for Judge John A. Jarvey in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.
