Jennifer Puplava’s Article “Data protection in the US and beyond” Posted on Grand Rapids Business Journal Law Blog

On September 30, 2018, the Grand Rapids Business Journal Law Blog posted Jennifer Puplava’s article “Data protection in the US and beyond.” In the article, Jennifer explains why we have been encountering so many privacy policy notifications. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) went into effect on May 25 and gives certain rights to European Union residents to safeguard their “personal data.” The GDPR requires all persons controlling or processing personal data of EU residents to adhere to the GDPR’s principles relating to data processing and address a number of requirements consistent with those principles. Businesses that violate GDPR are subject to heavy fines of up to $20 million, and can be liable for damages caused by noncompliant processing. Jennifer recommends that business owners consult with a qualified attorney to determine which standards govern their business, and implement or update their data protection program to comply with the applicable law.
